Case Studies

Case 1

Project: Secondary  Ballistic Windows

Location: Belgravia, London,

United Kingdom

Many Listed and Heritage buildings, both within the Capital and also in other parts of the Country, are subject to very rigid building control limitations. This is intended to maintain many of the building's historical features and characteristics.

In doing this however, it presents many challenges when it becomes necessary to instroduce security-related products whilst still maintaining those historical attributes. It has always been a challenge to mitigate ballistic threats and particularly where windows are concerned in these types of buildings.

A simple and unobtrusive product is the installation of Ballistic Rated Secondary Glazing Units. These are installed inside the existing windows, be them Crittal, sliding sash, metal frames, timber frames and generally any existing primary window. Here on this project in Belgravia, we manufactured and intalled 50mm thick hinged secondary glazing units to both windows for cleaning and maintenance. In addition to their ballistic properties, they also add an extra layer of security against forced entry.

Available in both European Standards to EN 1522/23 and EN 1063 BR1, BR2, BR3, BR4, BR5, BR6 and through to BR7 NATO ammunition.

American Standards 018.01NIJ IIIA , NIJ III and through to NIJ IV also capturing UL752.

Case 2

Project: Fire Rated Heritage Glazed Windows

Location: H M Treasury, Whitehall, London, United Kingdom

Blast and Ballistics Limited have developed a ‘Heritage’ Fire Rated Secondary Glazing System for use in Listed and Heritage buildings, both within the Capital and also in other parts of the Country. These can regularly be subject to very rigid building control limitations.

Our ‘Heritage’ Secondary Glazing Windows offer very minimal sight lines when viewed from both inside or outside. They are intended to visually maintain many of the buildings historical features and characteristics in addition to providing both Fire Insulation and also Fire Integrity.

This project in Whitehall was fitted with our ‘Heritage’ Fire Rated Windows to meet EI60 (that is 60 minutes insulation and integrity fire protection) but are also available in FR30, FR90 and also FR120 providing 2 hours of fire protection.

Our ‘Heritage’ products are manufactured in both steel and aluminium and also accommodate special shapes again typically curved heads which are commonly associated with buildings of this type.

See our data sheets for further information on all fire test standards and certifications.

Case 3

Project: Hinged Blast Release Vents

Location: Data Centre, Denmark

Hinged Blast Vents are used extensively around the World to release dangerous overpressures from electrical equipment and from the storage of volatile chemicals and gases, or from manufacturing processes with associated byproducts such as dust and other ignitable particles.

Our project in Denmark required 14 of our Hinged Blast Vents to provide mitigation for the potential of explosions from withing the Data Centre itself. Although they are available in multiple units providing greater pressure relief in one area, we were asked to provide smaller individual vents so that they could be placed around the potential threat and thus offer greater potential for blast mitigation, as the source of the explosion would be difficult to determine with any accuracy.

These vents are available in all sizes to meet customer requirements and although the release pressure is factory set before dispatch, they can be further adjusted on site, at any time, particularly if the threat changes or equipment within the building is replaced.

Case 4

Project: Protective Canopies / Shelters

Location: National Grid, United Kingdom

Working in industrial environments and in particular High Voltage Areas, this can present a number of hazards for operatives.

In this instance there is the potential for insulators to fall from height with considerable force and energy down to the ground and potentially injure operatives below.

Our specialist solution affords that protection and although visually simplistic in design it is engineered so that it absorbs these energies and deforms under a controlled response to mitigate this problem for the operative inside the canopy.

It is crucial for instance that the roof of the canopy undergoes a controlled amount of collapse to avoid a catastrophic failure and the roof itself then becomes a hazard. Specialist earthing arrangements are also incorporated for further protection within these high voltage operating areas. The units are easily moved around the working area for convenience and ease of handling.

Case 5

Project: Ballistic HVAC Louvres

Location: United Kingdom

Shown above is a Ballistic HVAC Louvre. Used frequently in guard houses and other secure areas, we manufactured and installed this unit onto a building that needed both ballistic protection and also HVAC connectivity.

Seen in the image above is a central dividing detail meaning that the internal HVAC system can be connected to provide a clear definition between the in and out pipework.

The connection points are fabricated to the rear of the assembly leaving the other elements of the louvre to provide the ballistic and also attack resistance protection.

Case 6

Project: Ballistic Primary Glazed Windows

Location: Television Studios, North London, United Kingdom

Heightened security is becoming more common place each day and the continuing rise of gun related incidents are increasing regularly.

The Television Studios responded pro actively to this threat and asked us provide large ballistic windows to their Studios.

Renown for some of the most entertaining programmes currently on Television the Studio commissioned us to provide protection from a wide range of ammunition and weapons.

The glazing was heavy, around 200kgs per individual piece and shown in the image is how we installed the specialist glazing into the ballistic frames. Shown is ballistic privacy glass which reduces the risk to staff and as is often pointed out -  anything that cannot be seen is a more difficult target to hit.

Case 7

Project: Blast Doors and Glazed Screens

Location: Middle East Office Suite

The threat of bomb blast is a continuing problem and nowhere more so than in Middle Eastern Countries. Here we manufactured and installed Bomb Blast Glazed Doors and Screens for just that sort of application, in a heavily protected hotel which was regularly used by International dignitaries.

Of primary concern was the potential for persons exiting the adjacent lift and detonating a hand delivered charge. With small devices such as this, the blast pressure is extremely high and more often than not will also carry fragmentation in the form of nuts, bolts, nails and so forth.

With fragmentation, this also involved us uprating the basic blast resistance to also accommodate the potential from this secondary threat. A highly engineered product.

Available in both European Standards to EN 1522/23 and EN 1063 BR1, BR2, BR3, BR4, BR5, BR6 and through to BR7 NATO ammunition.

American Standards 018.01NIJ IIIA , NIJ III and through to NIJ IV also capturing UL75.

Case 8

Project: Saferooms

Location: United Kingdom

Shown above is a Saferoom conversion that was carried out within a property in the UK.

With minimal invasive works, we carefully upgraded the existing walls to provide ballistic and forced entry protection. This was then decorated, hiding the works underneath.

The existing black ash veneered doorset was replicated to again provide ballistic and forced entry protection.

Integration between the doorset and wall was also an area that needed enhancement and in this specific case we installed hidden steel reinforcement, up through the wall element and bolted in to the roof space above, adding further protection to the whole installation.

The occupants were able to simply enter the room and throw the lock giving them a Safe Area for either refuge and a secondary use as a secure storage area for valuables whilst the property was unoccupied.

Blast & Ballistics provide a wide range of safety and security protection

Blast and Ballistics Limited is a UK based Company which operates both within the United Kingdom and overseas. All products are centred around tested and proven European and American standards of blast, ballistic, physical attack and fire protection.

It is very easy to think that we know what people need without actually understanding what people actually do need. Many people think that building blast rated products is the ultimate goal in their portfolio for example.

We however have learnt that where there is a bomb blast then there is usually fragmentation as well. That means shards of hard materials such as metal, glass, other components and so forth travelling along with the blast wave at around 2,000 to 3,000 metres per second. To protect against that we need to then incorporate ballistic protection.

The story does not end there because where there is tremendous heat and energy from the blast itself, then so too fire is not far behind. Anything that is flammable within buildings and property catch fire and burn. In addition to that is the loss of security. As in the case of a building that loses integrity through blast damage it then probably loses its physical security as well.

This is the forward thinking that has made Blast and Ballistics Limited a company that has multi disciplined products in anticipation of such events. However, forward thinking also needs to be underpinned with successful products and those in themselves need to demonstrate independent testing and certification.

Testing and Certification:

Our Independent Test Reports and Certifications span over nearly 25 years. This involves testing by Independent Laboratories - Fire Testing at Exova Warrington, Cambridge Fire and Research, Ballistic Testing at Wiltshire Ballistic Services, D J Goode Consultants, Live Arena Blast Testing with Government Departments at Spadeadam and so forth. Our products have depth and have undergone much development over this time.

We deliver products in alignment with recognised international and industry standards, as required by client and project specifications. Depending on application, this may include compliance with relevant:

  • Blast design and testing methodologies (e.g. shock tube or arena testing)
  • Ballistic resistance standards for bullet and fragmentation threats
  • Structural and materials standards applicable to protective construction
  • Quality management and manufacturing controls

Where appropriate, products are supported by analytical design, numerical modelling, and physical testing to demonstrate performance against defined threat levels. Documentation, certification, and third-party verification can be provided to support regulatory approval and client assurance requirements.

Engineering-Led Approach

The company’s approach is rooted in applied engineering, combining threat assessment, structural design, materials expertise, and practical manufacturing capability. This ensures that solutions are not only compliant with specified standards, but are also efficient, buildable, and fit for purpose in real-world operating environments.

Our company supports clients across defence, infrastructure, energy, government, and commercial sectors where protection against explosive threats, fire, security and ballistic attack is critical.

With an emphasis on engineering integrity, compliance, and practical deployment, Blast and Ballistics Limited delivers solutions that are designed to mitigate risk, protect life, and preserve critical assets under extreme conditions.

Understanding the Threat Environment – A typical Blast Threat analysis of how we undertake this and the considerations within just one discipline:

In a real-world explosion, the initial blast wave is commonly accompanied by primary and secondary fragmentation, including device casing, nearby materials, and structural debris. These fragments present ballistic threats capable of causing serious injury, breaching enclosures, and compromising protected spaces.

Explosive events can also trigger fires, damage fire compartmentation, and disable critical security measures such as doors, access control points, and perimeter barriers. The loss of containment or controlled access following a blast can significantly increase risk, particularly in high-value or high-occupancy facilities.

Blast and Ballistics Limited manufactures its products with this full threat spectrum in mind.

Integrated Protective Products:

The company’s product range is developed to provide combined resistance to blast loading, fragmentation, ballistic impact, fire exposure, and forced entry, including:

  • Blast- and fragmentation-resistant structures

Engineered panels, modules, and structural systems designed to manage overpressure, impulse, and debris generation while limiting secondary hazards.
