Ballistic Door Protection

The AK47 is often the weapon of choice in hostile environments. However, it is important to mitigate the threat from all types of commonly used weapons, from handguns through to rifles and also automatic weapons.

Independent ballistic testing to EN 1522/23 and EN 1063 demonstrates a products capability to protect against common calibers such as .357, .44, 5.56 and 7.62 NATO ammunition, but we look further ahead and also test products using AK47 ammunition as well as other products to NIJ standards. In some areas, a client may still look to use the original BS 5051 standards and we can also provide that. Similarly with UL products we have suitable alternatives providing a wide choice in steel, timber and glass products.

Easy integration & application

'Panel test' certification should be avoided. Some manufacturers may simply test a piece of material such as a steel plate, insert that into a hollow door and suggest that it conforms to a pre tested doorset. However Blast and Ballistics Ltd. test everything. The doorleaf, the doorframe, the hinges, the lock, the gaps between the door and frame, and also angle shots into vulnerable areas. This is why testing to EN 1522/23 is so difficult to achieve yet so reassuring for the Client.

Louvered vents are designed for installation into doors, walls, partitions, and screens. Internally and externally. Saferooms, plant rooms, chiller rooms and so forth. They can be supplied with a catch tray to prevent ingress of flammable liquids in the event of a terrorist attack. The combustible fuel drains back out to the outside of the building.

Door viewers are designed to accommodate door/panel thickness from 30mm up to over 100mm in depth.

Vision panels are designed and tested for installation into wooden or steel door sets. They are also used in the design of side screens and fanlights above door sets.
Windows available with different sections for all building applications.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is a ballistic door?

A ballistic door is a specially engineered bullet-resistant doorset designed to stop handgun and rifle fire while protecting people on the safe side. Unlike a standard security door, a ballistic door from Blast & Ballistics is independently tested as a complete doorset – door leaf, frame, hinges, lock and gaps – to recognised standards such as EN 1522/23 and EN 1063, NIJ and UL equivalents.

  • What ballistic levels can your doors achieve?

Our ballistic doors can be manufactured to a wide range of threat levels, including FB4, FB5, FB6 and FB7 to EN 1522/23, with test evidence against common calibres such as .357, .44 Magnum, 5.56 and 7.62 NATO. We also test specifically with AK47 ammunition and can match NIJ and UL ballistic ratings where required, giving you clear, certified performance for your risk profile.

  • How are Blast & Ballistics’ doors tested?

We do not rely on ‘panel tests’ alone. Instead, each ballistic door is tested as a complete system: the door leaf, frame, hinges, locks and even vulnerable areas such as edges and corners are shot, including angle shots. This approach makes EN 1522/23 certification harder to achieve, but far more reassuring for the client because it reflects how the door will perform in real condition

  • What does “No Spall” mean on your ballistic doors?

Our ballistic products are “No Spall” certified, which means that during testing no part of the bullet or debris penetrated or broke away from any part of the sample on the safe side. In practice, this significantly reduces the risk of internal injury from glass or metal fragments when the door is hit, making our doors safer for people sheltering behind them.
