 Guard Houses

Guard Houses- Oil and Gas Security - ballistic resistant and bullet proof to European, NIJ and UL752 ballistic testing.

Accompanying our 20’ and 40’ fully armored ISO shipping containers, we are now manufacturing small and highly maneuverable one and two man guardhouses. Security and ballistic and bullet protection in the Oil and Gas industry is very important. Operations are generally widely spread with several smaller site operations in autonomous areas in some of the most challenging Regions around the World.

Our bullet resistant guardhouses are tested to levels which cover BS EN 1522/23, NIJ and UL752 under independent test conditions.

Guardhouses are delivered to site either fully assembled inside an ISO shipping container or crated for further ease of maneuverability when accessing remote sites and areas. In component form the panels can literally be lifted from a vehicle by hand removing the need for heavy lifting equipment

Fully assembled units are factory wired with all electrics to customer’s specifications. Similarly with the units in component form, they are factory wired and then reconnected on site.

Levels of ballistic and bullet protection - This is always customer’s choice but the majority of units that we export are normally to protect against NATO 5.56, NATO 7.62 and Kalashnikov AK47 7.62 x 39 ammunition. Further protection can be incorporated also bringing levels of protection up to 7.62AP.

Glazing and all round visibility is important within guardhouses. Glass has to be commensurate in levels of protection to that of the structure itself. All glazing units are accessible and the ballistic/bullet glass can be quickly and easily changed. Standard sizes within this design mean that one size of glass will fit any aperture.

Summary of typical ballistic threats

  • Handguns - .357, .44 and shotgun calibers – generally used where weapons need to be concealed and often found in attacks connected to cash in transit, ATM machines and similar financial organizational activities.
  • Rifles – NATO 5.56, 7.62 and Kalashnikov AK47 – commonly used throughout all conflict areas with the AK47 being the most commonly found weapon.
  • Enhanced protection – 7.62 armor piercing and .50 calibers
  • Soft Armour Alternative – see video of ceramic specialist product available at: Blast and Ballistics Ltd.

What if the guardhouse was ever attacked or damaged in some way ?

That is quite straight forward to reinstate as all of the panels and glazing units can be dismantled and replaced with standard stock items whilst in the field. Unlike concrete buildings where bullets striking them will cause trauma and potentially ultimate failure, our demountable guardhouses are designed with that in mind. Simple – cost effective – easy to assemble and very easy to repair and maintain.

Oil and Gas Security

The nature of oil and gas exploration and delivery creates many security challenges around the world. The sites themselves are often remote from a company’s operating headquarters. The terrain can be hostile. Access to the site can be many miles away from roads in some instances. There is always the possibility of hostility from groups who roam looking for financial gain or simply to make a statement.

Oil and gas companies are generally well provisioned to protect their staff and even remote drilling sites have local armed protection and also cctv relaying live feed back to their headquarters. Similarly, using good communications and knowledge of local activity, companies are able to generally to prepare for short term emergency situations to protect their staff and workers. Most commonly now are the provision of ballistic or bullet refuge containers positioned around the working area or site. This enables staff to take refuge whilst help is being provided. Protected from ballistic attack, bullets and forced entry they will provide a safe area when required yet appear nothing more than a conventional shipping container and therefore not attract unwarranted attention.

Similarly they are sometimes accompanied by one and two man guardhouses positioned around the entrance or perimeter of the site as shown above. Offering similar ballistic and bullet protection they provide a clean and controlled environment for guards or security staff who, should there be an imminent and more serious threat ahead of them, at least have the confidence that they are protected whilst they initiate their security procedures.

The sound of gun shots on remote sites may be nothing more than a local farmer going about his business. It is important however that staff are able to take refuge whilst the threat is being investigated and dealt with.

Global energy demand is expected to rise by as much as 30% over the next 30 years. Oil & gas and coal continue to be the most widely used fuels, and have the scale needed to meet global demand, and are expected to make up about 80% of total energy consumption in 2040. Much of this increase is in supply is expected to come from the Middle East and Latin American markets.

Blast and Ballistics Ltd. has been providing blast, ballistic and physical security solutions to the oil & gas sector and Defence Sectors in Iraq, Kurdistan, Nigeria, Malaysia, North America, Egypt and Somalia. We are a trusted security partner. Our services assist Oil & Gas and Defence companies in protecting their assets.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is a ballistic guard house?

A ballistic guard house is a pre-engineered, bullet-resistant shelter designed to protect security staff at access points and perimeters. Blast & Ballistics guard houses are built from armoured panel systems and ballistic glazing, tested to recognised standards such as BS EN 1522/23, NIJ and UL752, so guards can operate safely even under small-arms fire.

  • Where are your guard houses typically used?

Our guard houses are used on oil and gas sites, defence compounds, remote camps and critical infrastructure where entrances and checkpoints must remain manned in high-risk environments. They are often deployed alongside ballistic refuge containers to give both guards and site staff protected spaces during an incident.

  • What ballistic levels can the guard houses be built to?

Levels of ballistic and bullet protection are always chosen to suit the customer’s threat profile. Most exported units are designed to protect against NATO 5.56, NATO 7.62 and AK47 7.62×39mm rounds, with options to upgrade to 7.62 AP (armour-piercing) where required.

  • How are the guard houses delivered and installed on site?

Guard houses can be delivered fully assembled (often inside an ISO shipping container) or supplied in panel form. When shipped as components, the panels are designed so they can literally be lifted by hand from a vehicle and assembled without heavy lifting equipment, making them ideal for remote or difficult sites. Factory wiring is pre-installed and simply reconnected on site.
