Physical Security

Doors, Windows, Walls, Partitions, Screens, Locks, Master keys and cylinders. Traffic control and vehicle mitigation products, Data Centres. Loss Prevention Certification Board – Doors and Windows

New materials bring new possibilities into the areas of physical protection. As an example, lock protection and in particular cylinder protection has moved forwards to meet the continued rise in cylinder ‘bumping’, lock picking and lock snapping. Manufacturers have responded well to this challenge especially in the areas of Europrofile cylinders which are commonly used throughout many residential and commercial properties. In addition, multi point locking is now more common place than ever for this level of security.

However, whether it is window locking or door locking that may be required, it is of little use if the door or window itself is not fit for purpose. In addition to our range of standard door and window products we also meet our customer’s requirements with bespoke solutions.

Some modern materials have multi disciplined properties either by design or sometimes by default. We use materials covering a wide range of attack tools and machines as well as also being able to resist ballistic and blast attack. This opens up many possibilities in the design not only of walls, doors and windows but also other building materials and applications. Alloy steels, resins and other man made materials can all be combined to meet specific needs and threats.

Governments around the world have their own test methods and standards and in addition to that there are several commercial bodies that offer other recognised attack standards. Blast and Ballistics Ltd. have worked closely in both of these fields and have a deep knowledge and understanding of modern tools, equipment and attack methods which are employed at the highest levels of physical attack.

Surreptitious attack methods are also a closely guarded secret. They are often used at the very highest levels of Government protection where the theft of information rather than property is the major consideration. Walls, doors and windows can be probed by agencies who leave no trace of their intrusion which leaves them free to repeat their actions almost at will in some instances. We are able to provide specialist physical security products to combat these threats and we have many years of experience in doing so.

Doors

When doors in particular are not under blast or ballistic attack they must still offer protection from physical attack. Intruders may not only be armed but may also be carrying tools and have specialist knowledge of how to use them.

We design our products for resistance against physical attack and then enhance the product with special designs and materials to also provide blast and ballistic protection.

The heart of our wooden doorleaves is a specialist hardwood multi layered core which is tested to BS EN 1192 – Severe duty test. Furthermore, products are available to meet LPS 1175 and also BS EN 1627. This, dependant upon the performance specification, can also be enhanced with steel sheets followed by decorative surface finishes to give the look and feel of real wood. Real wood mouldings, panels and veneers, along with solid timber sections provide beauty and performance. Stains, paints or lacquers add that finishing touch for long life and serviceability.

Steel and fully glazed doorsets undergo just as much attention. Smooth clean lines on steel doors give a rugged yet attractive appearance and also a sense of security simply by its appearance. Fully glazed doorsets allow natural light to flood into any room or area. The ability to provide a wide angle of vision makes these perfect for entrance doorsets, airlocks, corridor doors. With the addition of blast and ballistic protection it integrates with any architectural security solution.

 Master Key Solutions

Master key suiting removes the necessity for large numbers of keys. They can be ordered with our door products or separately as a retro fit item at a later date and even on to existing doors. Ordering extra keys is simple and secure. With some basic information from the customer we can plan the key suiting and then supply all cylinders and keys

Here is simple schematic to show how a Master key suite may operate:

 Types of Cylinders

Double Europrofile cylinders are available with keys at both ends or key externally and thumb turn internally.

Also shown is a half cylinder, Scandinavian Oval cylinder and rim cylinder

Anti Snap cylinders are also available as part of a keyed system. They also incorporate special measures to resist ‘bumping’ and lock picking

Abloy Protec. Unprecedented lock picking security. The ABLOY® PROTEC cylinder not only meets but exceeds international standards for high security including UL 437 and EN 1303.

High security key suiting can also be used in padlocks to provide a complete security solution.

As specialists in blast, ballistic and physical security, Blast & Ballistics can integrate high security key suiting and padlocks into a much wider protection package. From armoured doors, windows and protective screens to safe rooms, guard houses and secure containers, we design and manufacture solutions that are independently tested to recognised UK, European and US standards. Our technical team can work from your drawings or develop a complete specification for you, ensuring every lock, door and enclosure forms part of a coherent, high-performance security system.

Door Handles

When the only part of a door that a person normally touches is the handle, then it has to be the right handle. With so many locking systems to choose from that meet the performance criteria of the doorset, then we rarely fail to meet the clients or architects expectations.

Hinges

Dependant upon the application we suggest the most suitable hinge for the level of protection that is needed. Sometimes a full height continuous hinge and sometimes several individual hinges.

Further Protection

Hinge bolts are hardened steel pins which are fitted into the edge of the doorleaf between the hinges. This means that if the door is attacked or put under a blast loading they will lock into the frame and increase the resistance down the hinge side of the door. They are only visible when the door is open and offer incredible strength when the door is closed.

Push Plates and Kick Plates

These are complimentary items which are generally only used on commercial door applications. They are either small vertically fitted plates on the face of the door, around the lock area and used to push the door open with predominantly when used with access control locking. Similarly across the very bottom face of a doorleaf and in these situations they are known as 'kick plates', to protect the face of the doorleaf from general kick and scuff marks.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Which standards do your physical security products comply with?

Our physical security doors and locking systems can be designed and tested to leading standards, including LPS 1175 (SR2–SR6) and BS EN 1627/30, with door cores tested to BS EN 1192 Severe Duty. Locking systems are also tested to LPCB 1175 and BS EN 1627/30 level 4, giving you clearly defined, independently verified levels of resistance.

  • How do you protect against modern lock attacks like bumping and snapping?

We use high security cylinders and multi-point locking specifically developed to combat cylinder bumping, lock picking and lock snapping, particularly on widely used Europrofile cylinders. Options include anti-snap cylinders and premium ranges such as ABLOY® PROTEC, which exceeds international high security standards like UL 437 and EN 1303

  • Can you provide doors and windows that combine physical, blast and ballistic protection?

Yes. Our products are often designed first for resistance to physical attack, then enhanced with blast and ballistic materials. We use modern alloys, steels, resins and other man-made materials with multi-disciplined properties so that doors, windows and walls can resist tool attack while also meeting required ballistic and blast performance levels.

  • Do you offer master key systems and key suiting as part of physical security?

We do. Master key suiting can be supplied with new door products or retrofitted to existing doors. We plan the key suite from basic customer information, then supply all cylinders and keys. High security key suiting is also available in padlocks, giving a complete keyed physical security solution across a site.

  • What types of locking and hardware can you integrate into physical security doors?

We offer a full range of one, two and three-point locking systems, including emergency escape to BS 179, panic bars, access control, mechanical key locking and key suiting. Hardware can be from trusted brands such as Glutz, Chubb, Yale, Union, Mico, ASSA, Abloy, Pickersgill Kaye and Surelock McGill, with cylinders from Kaba, ASSA, Abloy, Medeco, Yale and others
